Darkness: 12 (New Species)
Kat’s boss wants dirt on the NSO. She is sent to Homeland undercover but everything goes wrong as soon as she enters the front gates. She is arrested by a big, powerful, sexy New Species but she is not frightened. He turns her on and things heat up fast between them. Now, she just hopes he doesn’t break her heart.
Darkness admires Kat’s courage but he cannot trust anything she says. He hasn’t been with a female for years because he knows he is too damaged. He is not mate material, despite his desire to possess her in every way. Darkness fears losing control—the one thing that defines his life. He doesn’t think he can tear down the protective walls he’s built, even for her.
Inside Scoop: Kat never realized how much fun handcuffs and dominant males could be until she discovered her kinky side through Darkness’ need for control.

I have to say that this is one of my top three favorite New Species for a whole host of reasons, starting with loving the kick butt heroine, the pace, the intermingling of new species we know and love, bringing the overarching storyline full circle, as well as a truly damaged new species who's been more damaged than most. If you haven't been reading the series, I wouldn't recommend starting here since the storyline has its roots all the way back to book 1, Fury, through the last, True. You co...
You could skip some books in between, but those two are the most important to this particular book.
Kat is an FBI agent who's been sent undercover into Homeland under the guise of instructor from a forensic crime lab, except she blows her cover immediately by kicking some serious a$$, as this book starts with a bang... literally. She's really been sent to search and recover someone for her boss, but Kat knows something is not right about the operation and uses the opportunity as a break instead, with all intentions of returning empty handed, except now she has to tap dance her way around her impressive combat techniques. After the NSO discover she's with the FBI, they decide to play along with her pathetic story to see why she's truly at Homeland. Something along the lines of keep your friends close and your enemies closer, Darkness is determined to uncover Kat's secrets by any means possible.
The lowdown is that there is a significant amount of angst, but it felt right in this context. Darkness has been through some pretty bad stuff and I felt the story explained well enough why he is the way he is. Kat was certainly a strong enough character to handle the crap he kept dishing out and at the end of the day, he didn't quite get to three strikes, so I'm okay with the patience and forgiveness Kat specifically had to demonstrate. I especially enjoyed the dynamics between Darkness and all the other New Species, especially Fury. This story, more than most, weaved in a host of supporting, once starring, characters, and it felt nice to catch up with some of my favorites as well as some new characters. Something was brewing with Trey Roberts, and I'm wondering if this is a hint at the first new species female and human male story Laurann has talked about. All in all, a great addition that was action packed from the start and wouldn't let me put it down.

This book, I can honestly say is completely different from ANY of the other New Species Novels. From the plot, the internal & external conflicts surrounding the main characters, and the characters themselves.
I loved every single aspect of this book. It was refreshing & everything just flowed well. It was sexy, romantic, frustrating, suspenseful & heartfelt. I loved how the children of the New Species are incorporated here, and I loved all the moments between Darkness & Fury very touching,...

I loved every single aspect of this book. It was refreshing & everything just flowed well. It was sexy, romantic, frustrating, suspenseful & heartfelt. I loved how the children of the New Species are incorporated here, and I loved all the moments between Darkness & Fury very touching, amusing. Just beautiful.
Darkness is definitely unlike any New Species male I've met. His issues and circumstances and how they've shaped & affected him, will break your heart. Even in those moments when you want to strangle him, you can't be angry with him cos you get the why of it all. He's scary but he can be sweet in his own way. He just shines here. I really love his character. And I was pleased & enjoyed watching him come full circle. And the male is just beyond sexy. Hot. All of it. *blushes*
Kat I LOVE HER! She is the perfect representation of a strong yet vulnerable woman. A kick a** heroine. One who when she has to, will make the hard choices without flinching, backing down, or being a b**ch about it. But she's also comfortable with showing when she needs or loves or wants someone. Her softer side, quiet strength is just as formidable as her aggression and I love that. She is the perfect mate for a male like Darkness. ANNNND... She didn't have not one TSTL moment in this novel! I'm dang near in love with her myself. Kat & Darkness certainly have the white hot passion going on. In and out of the bedroom. They definitely burned up the pages.
The Villains were done well here. The reason & motivations behind all they did was not only believable and didn't have me rolling my eyes, but it kept me intrigued & eager to know how it would all pan out. I wasn't disappointed how things came to a close either.
I loved the interactions with all the other secondary characters here as well. They brought a certain life to the story & just help moved things along in a very entertaining way.
If you have been following this series I highly recommend this read. If you haven't and are interested, I still recommend this read but STRONGLY suggest you start this series from the beginning & read in order.
Happy Reading:) I'm finally on to book 13 "Smiley" My baby.

Darkness didn't have that 'angst' of some of the other New Species books, and the storyline was a little thin. With that said, I thought it was still a pretty good book.
I thought that Kat was a strong female in the story, funny at times; pushy at other times. She was really into Darkness, and she was ready to jump his bones at the first opportunity. I thought that Kat was a strong female in the story, funny at times; pushy at other times. She was really into Darkness, and she was ready to jump his bones at the first opportunity. She was seasoned FBI agent sent by her boss into Homeland to find and extract his brother-in-law who was being held as a prisoner by the New Species. This is where the story fell short. Kat never even gave a half hearted attempt to search or inquire about this prisoner, instead she zoned in on Darkness and the story took on a new life of its own from there.
I like more of the storyline with the New Species to have that action, mystery and love story all wrapped up in each book. This book was more along the lines of Darkness' salvation from from his internal demons of not bbeing good enough for any female (new species and/or human), emotionally void, etc. After many attempts of sexual advances from one of the 'Gifted' were denied, Darkness was instantly drawn to Kat, a human female.
I am really glad that Kat was given a strong and sometimes loud and in your face personality. It made for a good read, and a few good laughs.
Looking forward to reading the next book in the series: Smiley...
